Big fans of Photographer Jonna Paterson, we featured her children’s photography several times on Pirouette. Now comes the day to congratulate her for being on the cover of Milk Magazine n.41! Joanna tells us more about how she got there and how it feels…
Did you meet Milk magazine before doing the shoot? Can you tell us how things happen?
I had a meeting with the stylist Kate Van Der Hage who regularly shoots for Milk and told her about an idea I had for a shoot, she asked if she could send the idea to Milk Mag. Milk Mag liked the idea so we shot it hoping that they would like the final results, but not knowing for sure if they would run the story or not, we were thrilled that they published it and that one of the images made the cover!!
Where did the shoot take place?
I spent a lot of time searching for a location and we got very excited with this one as it was perfect. We wanted wide open interior spaces with lots of different floor surfaces. Its a disused and semi-derelict 1950’s boarding school. The school had deserted feeling of the Mary Celeste with books still open on the tables . The art room was amazing when the school finally shut down the children celebrated by going crazy spraying paint and drawing all over the walls – it was like a paint.
With what other brands and magazines have you worked in children’s?
in the last few months I have shot for Marks & Spencer , Hackett, Mothercare and Sunday Telegraph kids Fashion AW13 Magazine. I’m just about to shoot the next Sunday Telegraph SS14 kids fashion MAg and excited as have a great shoot in mind!
What do you like best in your work as a photographer, and particularly when it comes to working with kids and kids brands?
The place I’m aiming at is a strong , visual, bold concept , but something natural and believable happening with the model – not a pastiche of childhood – but something that chimes true and is believable enough to make the artificiality of a fashion image have life.
What brands did you and Kate select for the shoot?
Many! Start-rite, Stella McCartney kids, Marni, Bonpoint, Wovenplay, American Apparel, bobo choses, H&M, no added sugar, La Loi, Cacharel, Scotch R’Belle, Dr Martens,Bobo Choses, Mini Boden,Caramel Baby & Child, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Scotch R’Belle and we also included vintage dresses from Shona Patterson (shonapatterson.co.uk).
