Ilona Szwarc on American girls and dolls

The relationship between these young American girls and their dolls is at once fascinating and upsetting, beginning with their astonishing resemblance. The stagings, matching clothes, and emotions in the work of the Polish-American photographer Ilona Szwarc seem to play a major role in this World Press Photo Award-winning series (only one image was awarded). We see these future American women personified by these “anti-” or “post-Barbies.”
